One Wonderful Day

Bike to Work Day is a free, annual event that encourages workers to commute by bike for fun, a healthier lifestyle, and to improve the environment. It’s a joint effort between the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Commuter Connections program and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association.

What makes Bike to Work Day so much fun? Glad you asked!

RIDE ALONGS

Ride alone, with coworkers, or meet up with new friends in a group ride (convoy) led by more experienced bicyclists.

FREE STUFF

Treat yourself! Register and participate to get your free Bike to Work Day T-shirt from your local pit stop on event day. You’ll also be entered into a drawing for multiple chances to win a new bike!

Free Registration Opens March 2026

LOCAL PIT STOPS

Refresh and refuel at your local pit stop. There are over 100 of them across the DMV offering free T-shirts for those who register. Most pit stops offer free refreshments, swag, the chance to win raffle prizes, and more, while supplies last.

DID YOU KNOW?

The League of American Bicyclists began Bike to Work Day in 1956. In the DMV, the annual event has
grown from a few hundred riders in 2001 to tens of thousands of participants.

MEET OUR ORGANIZERS

COG

The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) is an independent, nonprofit 501 c(3) association with a membership of 300 elected officials from 24 local governments, the Maryland and Virginia state legislatures, and U.S. Congress. Every month, over 1,500 officials and experts connect through COG to share information and develop solutions to the region’s challenges.

Commuter Connections

A program of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at COG, Commuter Connections promotes bicycling to work, carpooling, a commuter rewards app called CommuterCash, and other alternatives to drive-alone commuting. Commuter Connections is funded by the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and the U.S. Departments of Transportation.

WABA

The Washington Area Bicycling Association empowers people to ride bikes, build connections, and transform places. We envision a just and sustainable transportation system where walking, biking, and transit are the best ways to get around. WABA is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization.
